Monica, I'd say that the best way to learn, just like Liz and I agreed on in the panel, is to just try. Ignore the books until you have specific questions, and even then, try a forum first. I learned Java by pasting in a sample class into Eclipse and individually researching why I was getting syntax highlighted errors. Piece by piece, I built the structure in my brain--that's the only way to do it without a teacher that will make any real difference to you.

I was at GeekGirlCon as a staff member, so I didn't get to see your panel (my husband did, though). Do you have any suggestions for learning additional programming languages, other than the use of books? Programming books confuse me and I have found that I learn best being taught by someone who is experienced, usually in a one-on-one setting. Thank you!

Oh, but I do expect everyone to 'just do it.' It looks to me as if you didn't truly read my post. I expect that someone good at organizing parties and who wants to start a business organizing parties will just do it.

I expect that any woman who wants to start her own business will not listen to the voice of defeat and low self esteem, and I certainly expect that anyone who believes that compassion as opposed to courage is what's needed to start a business has never done so themselves.

If you want to be compassionate, start a charity. Some of my best friends run charities. I run a business, and I grant respect to people who stand on their own two feet. I proffer encouragement to women who have never heard anyone tell them they can do it. I don't prop them up.

And if you're not good at HTML, don't start a web development company.

Different people have different strengths. You can't expect everyone to "just do it"

Some understand HTML or Java or C++ (you name the language or framework) like it is their native tongue.

Others are good at other things like organizing a party.

You need to understand this. Only then all those degrees you have earned have any meaning. It is not enough to strut them all out. You need to show compassion and understanding.

[...] (1) I started with a bounty on Craigslist. I figured that for the first time, I’d actually WANT to get all those offers from all over the world to help me at low prices, and in my Craigslist ad, I linked to my blog post about searching for a logo. [...]
